In The Shadow by Sylvain Raynard, William has a very difficult decision to make. Unfortunately, there is no right answer, and every choice means he and Raven–and even all of Florence–will suffer.
While contemplating his decision, he finds the time to show his support for Raven on a job well done with a restoration of the Birth of Venus at the Uffizi. (albeit stealthily in the Sala Tribuna, located three doors down from the main reception) 😉
The heavy weight of recent events and the decision he would have to make, had effected his usual behavior. Especially toward Raven.
William intended to simply be there for Raven at the Uffizi, and act as if nothing was wrong. But he was doing a horrible job of it, which was not lost on Raven. She had enough of his hot and cold behavior, and decided to get to the bottom of it, then and there.
But when she confronted him about her frustrations with the way he’d been acting, his reaction was not defensive or combative, as one might expect. Quite surprisingly, the powerful Prince of Florence…simply held her close and put his head on her shoulder. A rare show of vulnerability by William, but also the moment he resigned himself to reveal his dilemma to Raven.
I decided to try to capture that quiet moment between the two of them. I found the scene even more interesting once I had researched that particular room in the Uffizi, in order to recreate it for the illo background. In the scene, William leads Raven to a large table in the center of the room. While laying out the illo, I chose an angle of the room so it seemed as though the statues were also part of the scene. The three statues seem to be eavesdropping on the couple. Especially the one couching behind them!
Hmmm…I wonder if Sylvain Reynard was quite aware of the layout of the Sala Tribuna, and specifically chose to place Raven and William in that room on purpose…? 😉
Married life seems to agree with Christian Grey! In Fifty Shades Freed, the newlywed and his new bride enjoy their honeymoon on the beaches of Monte Carlo. A rather playful Christian emerges, and decides to have some fun teasing Ana. I thought I would attempt to create an illo when things seemed to be heating up the ocean waters… 😉
Ana is more than willing to experience a bit of romance at sea, even with a few sunbathers as spectators watching from shore.😲 Normally, she is definitely not one to cause a spectacle…but being with Christian seems to have that effect on her. 😉
However, he had no intention of engaging in any sort of hanky panky at that moment, much to Ana’s disappointment. Instead, he leaves her high and dry (well, figuratively speaking, that is) as he follows up the steamy kiss with an acrobatic plunge into the water…then mischievously swims away!
While Ana found this change in mood as silly and amusing as Christian, she still vowed to get him back for tricking her.
Swimming back to shore, she ponders a good revenge. Upon arriving back at the sun loungers in the sand, she makes sure to lie face down and then removes her bikini top. (remembering that just moments earlier, Christian had made it quite clear that he did not approve of Ana going topless on the beach–even though so many other women were doing it.)
But unfortunately, Ana’s attempt at lighthearted revenge backfires when she dozes off in the warm sun. Things don’t go quite as she planned, and is soon confronted by Christian…who is no longer so playful and happy…
A couple of years ago, I actually attempted an illo of what came next… 😉 You can check out ‘bikini blunder’ HERE.
…and that isn’t even the end of it…the battle of wills does continue…
From the very start, Gideon Cross makes it clear what he wants, and doesn’t hesitate to act. This is especially the case when he meets Eva Trammel in ‘Bared to You’from the Crossfire Series by Sylvia Day.
In her first visit to his quite lavish office, he leaves no doubt about how he feels about her. She also realizes the attraction is all very mutual. 😉 But she was still quite taken aback by the sudden and unexpected results!
While Eva is not exactly timid, at times can be quite bold herself! One such time occurred at the conclusion of lunch in another visit to Gideon’s office. Much to his (very pleasant) surprise, Eva took a bit of a detour before heading back downstairs to her desk. I thought I would try creating an illo showing how Eva can also have some surprises up her sleeve… 😀
Although her decision made her late getting back to work, it seemed to be well worth it… 😉
Oh gosh, I didn’t realize that I had completed so many pieces that I hadn’t posted here yet! They are all sketches or little practice illos that were all posted previously on my Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr pages.
The illo above started out as a mindless sketch for practice that I started earlier this month, but then I decided to paint it as well! I stumbled upon a photo of a man peeking out from under sheets and initially used that idea as reference, but changed the male face and pose a bit.
These two sketches were done last year on the spur of the moment when I had a bit of free time. It was a nice change to simply focus on lines and not worry about color.
I’m always seeing photos online of cotton candy or pastel-colored hair and love the look. I’m sure upkeep must be a lot of work, so I thought it’d be a lot easier to do a quick illo of it instead. 😉
A lot of the New York Fashion Week runway shows are streamed online, and I really enjoy watching them. One very shimmery and shiny dress caught my eye during the Misha Collection Spring/Summer 2017 show. So, I decided to attempt to paint it!
That’s the first batch. 😉 I still have a few more to share, but don’t want to bombard you with them all in one post! Remember that you can always see anything new I’m working on by following any of my social media accounts. All the links are at the top right of my site–just click on an icon and it will take you there! But in any case, I will always share my work here as well (and will try not let so much time go by before posting!)

There are several interesting and varied characters in The Raven by Sylvain Reynard, but none seem to have as complicated and ever-changing relationship as William and Aoibhe. No matter the situation, there always seems to be an undercurrent of constant instability. Are they allies on the same side, or is William just keeping his enemies close? Do they have a true connection or are they just convenient liasons? Just when you think you have more of a clue, circumstances change.
The complexity of their relationship was clearly on display when a weary William returns to Palazzo Riccardi aiming for a quiet moment to contemplate and meditate on recent events. But Aoibhe had other ideas in mind. (I must admit that even though I know that ‘Aoibhe’ is pronounced ‘Eva,’ I can’t quite stop hearing it in my head exactly as it’s spelled!)
Ever since I read this portion in the book, I had a clear image of how I pictured the two of them in this particular scene. So I thought I would finally attempt to depict it in an illo!
What made this interaction between them most interesting, is that the body language and facial expressions described during the scene seemed to suggest that Aoibhe believed she was controlling the situation and feeling quite confident. But as the scene progressed, that was clearly not the case…

Since it’s not only Valentine’s Day, but also the opening week of Fifty Shades Darker in theaters, I thought I would create an illo inspired by both!
In the books, as well as the movies, the shower proves to be a rather popular destination for Christian and Ana. 😉 There were moments of tenderness, sadness, revelations and confessions as well as passion. But I thought I would attempt to illustrate a more simple and sweet moment between the two of them.
Perhaps before celebrating Valentine’s Day with a romantic evening out, they both decide on a shower before getting ready. Initially, there is nothing really out of the ordinary, surprisingly. Just your average shower (meaning there are no shenanigans…yet.)
But as the steam begins to build, Christian gets an idea to get their Valentine’s festivities off to a sweet start. Reaching past an unknowing Ana, he slowly and carefully begins to draw on the steamy shower glass with his fingertip, while tenderly giving her a kiss on the head. Now wondering what he is up to, she turns just in time to see Christian finishing one simple and perfect heart.
Always deeply touched when Christian surprises her with such affectionate gestures, I can only imagine that what happens next will cause them to become a bit late getting ready and making their restaurant reservations on time. 😉
