Happy Landing

Happy Landing Christian Grey is never lacking when it comes to surprises, especially if they are meant for Ana Steele. The tables are soon turned in Fifty Shades of Grey, when she takes an impromptu trip out to Georgia to see her mother, and the news comes as quite a shock to him. But if there’s one thing you can depend on, it’s Christian’s unpredictability. So even while Ana is spending some time in Savannah…Christian manages to keep the supply of surprises plentiful. Not least of which is a heart-stopping adventure thousands of feet in the air! I decided to attempt to illustrate Christian treating Ana to his own special way of welcoming her back to solid ground. 😉

Before both Ana and Christian ended up in Georgia, the idea of being in a relationship was still very much up in the air (no pun intended.) 😉 So when Ana announced her tentative trip to Georgia, this stunned Christian and brought up his fears of abandonment, ingrained in him since childhood. Immediately his only conclusion was that Ana was running away and rejecting him.

But after showing up in Savannah, and engaging in a session of questions and answers in his hotel with Ana, his fears were laid to rest. By taking her soaring in the glider and sharing an activity that most likely provides solitude amidst the chaos, Christian was opening himself up to Ana as best he could. This could even be considered a continuation of the events that had occurred the evening before when she had asked several questions about his past…and he answered them all–much to Ana’s surprise!

It was probably even more comforting to him knowing that she enjoyed something that provided him with great pleasure (…since other things that gave him pleasure were still up for consideration between the two of them.) 😉 This reinforced a feeling of closeness for Christian and this positive discovery acted as a sort of validation of the unique feelings he had for her. He was probably quite impressed that Ana enjoyed not only the solitude of silently gliding in the sky, but also the heart-stopping thrills that soaring also provides.

Not content to give Ana her first taste of soaring with a simple, average ride in a glider, Christian planned a more thoughtful and meaningful outing. He established yet another first for them together, by making sure the early morning flight was special…as they chased the dawn. He hoped that their adventure in the skies over Georgia was providing the ‘more’ Ana longed for from Christian. To his delight, she assured him it did! In fact, it provided so much delight that the instant he helped Ana out of the glider, he couldn’t help but pull her close for a passionate kiss!

So, even though Ana’s spur of the moment decision lead to some initial conflict on the outset, it actually acted as a catalyst for much needed discussion. As a result, both learned more about the other, and helped to strengthen their developing relationship.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I have been thinking about you each day. This is perfect! And your description, spot on! You say you only read the books once. I don’t think so! I hope your family issues have turned for the better, as we SO appreciate this. Love your work Victoria!

You are entirely too sweet, Nancy! I have to thank you for keeping me in your thoughts. I’m really touched by that 🙂 I’m also very happy that you enjoyed the new illo, as well as my ramblings! Feel a bit rusty since it’d been a while since I’d been able to create anything, so it was nice to hear you liked it! 😀 But honestly, I have only read the books once! However, when I decide on an illo idea, I do go back and look at the books and make notes on the details, so I can get that all as accurate as possible. 😉 Thanks again for all of your kinds words!

Gah Victoria I am so glad your back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am absolutely in love with this new illustration :))))))))) Oh course I say that about every one of your depictions. Your work is absolutely phenomenal!!!!! I love the passion you created between Ana and Christian in their passionate kiss. What you stated about the Georgia trip is completely on the mark and very true. I was the beginning of their trust and respect for one another, (you would have to completely trust someone when they are taking you in a glider LOL.) Although everything came to a crashing halt afterwards when Ana returned home, I do believe as well that their ‘so called relationship’ at the time was strengthened by that faithful trip. Once again you continue to surprise us with the contrast of the colors and details as usual. I especially love the color of Ana’s sweatshirt of the grey. 😉 Whether you planned that or not; it is very amazing!!!!! I however do have another one of my unimportant questions again. You had once told me about the style of Ana’s hair; of how you could not see her having bangs because of the upkeep and so on. I have realized you go completely by the book as to description and details. For one I am in love with the way you designed Ana and Christian’s hair color! It is so rich and beautiful I always cannot help admiring it. However; I have read Ana’s hair was apparently chestnut brown, to which chestnut I assume from the pictures I’ve seen has a touch of red in it, (which I have a hard time believing). But when I see your depictions it is always a rich brown color with no red at all. I was just wondering if you imagined Ana’s hair a rich brown or a chestnut? I am so so soooooo sorry for rambling on again as usual, I am just so excited that you are back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Your faithful fan!

Hahaha! Hi Haliey! Wow, that’s a lot of exclamation points! 😀 But thanks so much, you are so sweet! 🙂 Really glad you liked the new piece and so grateful for your patience. Sorry it’s been a while.

Ah, you bring up a good point–if they hadn’t had those discussions in Georgia which helped to strengthen their blossoming relationship, I wonder if things would have had a different outcome when things got *much* more complicated and difficult once they got back? Hmmm…

I can always depend upon you to take the time to examine every detail in my illos! Yes, the color of the sweatshirt was planned. hahaha I figured–what better color to use? 😉 But it also seemed like a color he would probably wear (since it was Christian’s sweatshirt that he gave her to wear.) Your typical sweatshirt color, and not flashy or trendy. Seems like he keeps his wardrobe pretty simple–especially since he was often wearing his typical ‘uniform’ of white linen shirt and jeans. 😉

First of all, no question is unimportant! 😉 Second, I chose their hair color to keep a contrast of sorts. They both basically have two different shades of brown, but the ‘copper’ highlights in Christian’s hair are mentioned often, so I play that up to show more of a contrast between the two of them. That way, if they are posed close together their hair doesn’t look too similar. I’ve always pictured Ana’s hair as just a dark brown color without any highlights or tints. Although I may be wrong! But I’m glad you like the way it turns out in the illos!

Always love hearing from you, and thanks so much for taking the time to stop by and saying hello! 😀

Thank you for this ilo. I especially love this part of the book because it is the morning after Christian finally hears Anna mutter in her sleep that she loves him and will never leave. Unconditional love is extremely powerful, don’t you think? Keep up the awesome work.

Hi Vicky! Always my pleasure to share the illos, but very glad you enjoyed it! Thanks! 🙂 So many pivotal moments occurred during the short trip to Georgia, didn’t they?! Oh yes, unconditional love is very powerful! It’s certainly a major theme throughout the trilogy.

I love your drawings!! You captured the trilogy perfectly!! I’m curious if Kate, Mia, or Elliott could appear with a layers baby caption?

    • admin

Thanks Danielle! I’m glad you’re enjoying my illos and I really appreciate you checking them out! 🙂 It’s always been my intent to try to do illos or sketches of every character, but just haven’t gotten to them all yet! 😉

  12. Christine H.

    Hi Victoria ~

Welcome back!!! You were missed. Hope all is well with you and your family:)
I really enjoyed this particular scene. It did show how much Ana was up to try new things and Christian slowing opening up to her, by taking her gliding. How fun!!! Sometimes actions do speak louder then words. I always get mushy the way Christian embraces Ana in his arms…aaahhh 🙂

Thanks so much Christine! I really appreciate the well wishes 🙂 Oh you are so right–actions do speak louder than words! Also, as with a lot of parts of the trilogy, *so* many revelations and things happened in such a short time, didn’t they?! (…and sometimes in very unexpected ways!) 😉

  14. Tiffany

Hi Victoria–good to see you are back! hope your family is well.
As usual, love the illo!!!. I’m afraid that since your illos and descriptions are spot on with my imagination, I might not like the movie if it is so different from books. Especially if it does not come out as your illos and my imagination 🙂

Again, love your work, and we missed you.

    • admin

Hi Tiffany! Thank you for the kind wishes. 🙂 Very happy to hear that you enjoyed the new illo! Oh you’re extremely sweet, but I’m sure the movie won’t disappoint. If it does end up being different from the way you pictured what’s in the books, maybe you’ll end up really enjoying the movie adaptation in its own way!
Aw, you’re always so lovely 🙂 Really appreciate you stopping by and saying hello, and thanks so much again! 🙂
