Throughout the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, Christian surprised Ana quite often. Some were good surprises, some bad, some shocking or even heart wrenching.
But in Fifty Shades Freed, he managed to provide a honeymoon surprise that Ana doesn’t stumble upon until after they had already returned to Seattle and are back at Escala. Fortunately, this surprise was a very pleasant one, even though it came about quite unexpectedly for Ana and quite literally stopped her in her tracks! I thought that quick moment of discovery while Ana was in the library would be fun to depict in an illustration.
This wasn’t the first time Ana had accidentally discovered photographs Christian had taken. Luckily, these photos were of a much more pleasant variety than the first time she happened upon that accidental find…Memories of the experience actually helped spur Ana into purchasing the Nikon as a gift for her new husband.
When she first presented the camera to Christian as a surprise gift after her shopping trip, it caused a bit of tension. She had nothing but good intentions, but initially Christian was confused and only equated the taking of intimate photos as an insurance policy rather than for something with artistic or pure recreational value. But after some rather tense discussion, once again Ana managed to change the way he viewed the dynamics of another situation in his life. Quickly the mood then shifted once again and playful Fifty was back…much to Ana’s great relief!
Soon, he was enjoying his new gift! The selfie photo captured Christian during a moment that most everyone–except for Ana–had never seen. Even while he quickly grabbed the camera and snapped a photo, Ana couldn’t even manage to look toward the it and smile. She could not take her eyes off of him as he gazed at the lens–looking very happy and very much in love. Since such brief moments of seeing Christian so unguarded and so truly happy were rare to observe, Ana couldn’t help but simply soak in the sight of him.
Much as Ana couldn’t bear to tear her gaze away from a rare instance of a happily beaming Christian, he also throughly enjoyed the simplicity of watching Ana as she peacefully slept. Both of them deriving great joy observing the other in unguarded, pure moments. The camera now allowed them both to freeze such points in time, which Ana unexpectedly discovered as the contents of the camera downloaded to her laptop.
So, while Ana intended the camera to be a lovely gift for Christian, it really turned out to be a special gift for both of them. Allowing each to have keepsakes of special points in time– that in the past, were simply fleeting moments that could only be briefly cherished.
