Even though they were toasting her graduation at the time, I thought this particular moment in Fifty Shades of Grey would make a good Skillo™ (my silly term for a piece that’s more than a simple sketch but less than a full illustration) perfectly appropriate for the coming New Year celebrations!
I would imagine that Ana and Christian would actually prefer a low-key celebration such as this to ring in the new year. They would be able to fully enjoy each other’s company and spend an intimate evening together, rather than spend the night surrounded by hundreds of rowdy party-goers in a fancy ballroom somewhere in Seattle.
As I was working on the sketch, I was thinking about the elements of the scene and a couple of things popped into my head that I thought were interesting. First, I realized that what Christian and Ana brought to the toast could also be a basic representation of each of them. Christian brought the bottle of Bollinger, which showed his preference for quality in all things. As we realized throughout the trilogy, Christian had the means to accept only the best for himself and those he cared about, no matter the situation. He would expect no less. While Ana had no qualms about using teacups (which may have even been mismatched) since she had to make do with the only things that were unpacked at the time. This related to her meager means as a cash-strapped student and her relative innocence at life’s experiences. She was used to adapting to her environment with only the resources she had available and seemed to have no problem with it.
The second thing I found interesting was that unlike the Bollinger and teacups offering a simplified characterization of Christian and Ana, their clothing exhibited an interesting contrast to what was the norm for each of them. Usually we find Christian dressed in a sharp business suit, or if more casual–in jeans, white shirt and jacket. But instead he arrives at Ana’s in jeans, t-shirt and…leather jacket! While Ana, who is normally found in t-shirts, jeans and Converse, was decked out in a grey chiffon halter dress and heels! Not quite certain if this really means anything, but I thought it was a nice little detail that made the scene a bit more charming. 🙂
Hmmm…my overactive imagination working overtime again I suppose. Such a seemingly simple and brief moment but of course I read so much into it! 😉
In any case, as this year wraps up, I hope it finds you all well, and that 2013 will bring only wonderful things!
Happy new year! 🙂
